La Vallée accompagne les étudiants de l’ESSTIN dans leur projet professionnel – Visite de GE Power Conversion

This year, La Vallée de l’Energie has followed these futures engineers as part of their Custom Career Path (Parcours Professionnel Personnalisé), a module that allows them to prepare their career. For each student, it is about the leading of a thorough and individual reflection on the various engineering professions.

Several meetings have allowed, among others, to exchange with former students of ESSTIN, today projects or studies engineers, to work on CV (résumé) and cover letter and to prepare for job interviews. The last step was to visit a significant company of the energy sector: it is the division Power Conversion of General Electric Group (GE), located near Nancy, which was chose with a visit realized on May 22.

After a presentation of General Electric group, Mr Olivier Cocheril, manager for customer intervention for the after sales service took charge of the group for the factory visit. The futures engineers travelled over all the production chain of the plant: manufacturing and installation of coil, rotor and stator through the winding and stacking of pre-cut sheets.

Then, the group approached the manufacturing area for High Speed Motors (MGV), which combine high technology and very skilled workforce. Motors turning up to 18,000 revolutions per minute and driven by a particular technology: magnetic bearings. Students were also able to see a motor for an offshore wind turbine of 8 meters in diameter and capable to produce 6Mwatts of power. Then, they discovered a work-in-process motor entirely made of stainless steel that will be completely submerged at more than 1,000 meters deep in the North Sea.

The tour of the factory was completed by the POD, propeller for boats that GE is able to manufacture but also to renovate. The company was capable to accommodate up to five POD aver 6 meters high. The entity Power Conversion is also competent to remove the propeller shaft, if necessary, and then reassemble the two elements.

We thank all the team of GE Power Conversion for their welcoming, their availability and the pedagogy they used throughout the visit. We were able to discover an industrial environment offering many know-how and advanced technologies.
